The Phoenix Club is a group of women with substantial life experience who meet monthly to find ways to use our time and skills to build new friendships and enrich the lives of those around us. We explore topics of cultural and practical interest, using our collective knowledge and experiences as well as the expertise of invited speakers. In December we will welcome Alice Ramos to speak with us about “What is Beauty and Does it Matter?” Alice will give us a philosophical explanation of beauty in its different types and forms. Is beauty only in the eye of the beholder or are there objective features that are common to beautiful objects and works of art? How does this apply to ways we live our everyday lives? Join us for this opportunity to enhance our understanding of why we are enriched by a museum visit, a good concert, or a scenic view in nature. Alice is Professor Emerita of Philosophy, St. John’s University, and Adjunct Professor of Natural Theology and Theological Aesthetics, St. Joseph’s Seminary.
