Bible Heroines in Renaissance & Baroque Art

About

WOMEN FROM THE BIBLE

A THREE PART ART SERIES

Their names and deeds often went unrecognized, but many women left their mark in history, art and literature. This is true for female figures from the Bible, who do not commonly occupy the center stage in the sacred narrative but whose gifts and deeds were of primary importance for the unfolding of the divine plan.

In this art series, we devote our attention to three of them: Saint Mary Magdalene (Nov 2023); Susannah (Jan 2024), an Old Testament heroine; and Saint Anne (March 2024), mother of the Virgin Mary. Each meeting we will focus on one of these women and we will share their stories, paying attention to how they were portrayed both in the written word (Bible and other sources) and in numerous works of art. The goal is to address the representative art around the stories of these characters and how it captures attitudes and actions that can inspire women today.

About The Speaker

Eveline Baseggio Omiccioli is a native of Treviso and studied Art History at Ca’Foscari University in Venice. She received her doctorate in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art at Rutgers University (NJ) with a dissertation on Venetian Renaissance sculpture. She is currently teaching at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where her classes on the History of Western Art & Civilization, Renaissance Art, and Baroque Art draw attention to a global and cross-cultural context. Dr. Baseggio has worked extensively in a number of art museums in New York and New Jersey, name the Morgan Library & Museum, The Frick Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Zimmerli Art Museum.
